You might wonder why we include Wicklow on a list of excursion opportunities from Dublin. The city only has 10,000 inhabitants and does not have a whole lot of attractions to boast about. But, still, it is worth a visit. Why?
In Wicklow County you can find the world-famous Powerscourt Estate. This is a beautiful estate occupying 19 hectares. Here a castle was built in the 13th century, but unfortunately, a fire in 1974 destroyed large parts of the castle. But, it has now been renovated and it absolutely worth a visit. Today a golf course, a hotel and a very nice restaurant is located here as well.
In Wicklow county, the famous Blessington Lakes can be found, and maybe the place in Ireland more Irish than anywhere else, Glendalough. The place is renowned for its Early Medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin, a hermit priest. Today visitors can enjoy the ruins, churches, lakes and beautiful nature as they pay a visit to Glendalough. If you want to see Ireland, visit Glendalough!
These are only some of the opportunities waiting for those paying a visit to the Wicklow county. To see these sites in one day you should either rent a car, or join in on a group trip.
